The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds

Colnesett were appointed, in early 2019, by Beanland Associates of Ipswich on behalf of The Bury St Edmunds Hotel Company Ltd, to carry out the refurbishment of their flagship hotel, The Angel Hotel, in the centre of Bury St Edmunds.

The building is a Grade II listed structure and, therefore, it was paramount that all proposed works were empathetic to the historic importance of the property.

The works comprised the complete strip-out and refurbishment of the customer facing areas: bar, restaurant, lounges and reception.

We very soon encountered hidden challenges, not unknown in a building of this nature, in that there had to be some redesign work carried out to enable works to proceed. Although this caused a delay in information we were still able to hand the project over in time for Easter 2019 having commenced it just after the clearing up from the New Year celebrations.

Elements included the provision of new bespoke lighting, new bar and associated services, major structural alterations, specialist wood flooring and redecoration.

Not many of our works are open to the public but this, of course, is and we would encourage you to visit the restaurant for a meal, the bar for a drink or relax in the lounge for a coffee or afternoon tea and luxuriate in the contemporary ambience that is exuded by this old, lovingly restored, old coaching inn.

The overall value of this project was approximately £1,000,000.
